Led the Analytical Techniques Group.
- Developed methods for trace and ultra trace analysis by GFAAS, ICP-AES and ICP-MS techniques. Samples included rock, ore, mineral, groundwater, seafloor sediment and wine samples.
- Appointed, trained, supervised and developed staff.
- Initiated and planned group research & development projects.
- Budgeted and demonstrated need for equipment purchase.
Developed commercial software via collaborative projects with instrument manufacturers.
Modified instrument design and developed new demountable plasma torch, many of these design modifications were incorporated into commercial spectrometers.
Set up shipboard analytical procedures and provided timely high quality data for the analysis of ppb levels of methane in seawater samples. This data was utilised in the highly successful search for "black smokers" in the Manus Basin off Papua New Guinea.
Managed the day-to-day operation of research projects within the Water Quality Group of the Division of Energy Technology. These included projects for:
